Durham teen attains Eagle Scout rank

DURHAM — Nathan Abbott, 16, of Durham Boy Scout Troop 145 was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout Feb. 29. The Eagle Scout “Court of Honor” ceremony was held at the Shiloh Fellowship Hall and attended by Nathan’s fellow scouts, friends and family and State District #46 Rep. Braden Sharpe, who presented a sentiment from the Maine State Legislature in honor of Nathan’s achievement.
Nathan’s journey in Scouting has included numerous adventures and learning experiences. He has made close and lifelong friends, within the Durham Troop and with other scouts he has met at summer camps and various on Scout trips. This past summer, Nathan was proud to accompany the Maine contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, a once-in-a lifetime event that included more than 45,000 Scouts from over 150 countries. Nathan’s Eagle Service Project was to build a safety railing system and historical display for the Town of Durham’s recreational area near Runaround Pond at the site of the historic Chandler Mill. Nathan has also performed numerous service activities in the local community with other members of his troop.
Nathan is a sophomore at Freeport High School, participating on the baseball, basketball and soccer teams. Nathan also enjoys mountain biking, downhill skiing and other outdoor activities. In his future, Nathan hopes to attend engineering school and pursue a career in mechanical engineering or a similar field.
