LISBON FALL — Ask 11 year-old Dylan Bailey what he looks forward to the most when it comes to playing high school football in the future, and he’ll tell you “Friday night games under the lights.”
For Lisbon football players — the younger recreation department kids on up to the high school seniors — along with countless dedicated Greyhound fans, the excitement about evening home games is building. Spurring the excitement is news regarding fundraising efforts by the Lisbon High School Athletic Boosters to install lights and replace bulbs, donated by Jeff Kelly of Enterprise Electric and the Kelly family.
The Boosters are looking for community support for the $90,000 project, to cover upgrade of electrical service to the field, as well as the cost of building foundations for, and later erecting, the poles.
Additional phases of the project include installing lights from the entrance to the field, as well as the parking area.
Kelly Austin, a former Boosters member and a “sports mom,” said she’s looking forward to what the lights will do for the athletes and the community as a whole.
“It’ll show our children that we are willing to invest in them,” Austin said. “Sports really teach children about life, friendships, and pushing the limits of self growth. The track teams will also benefit from this addition.” Austin has a daughter on the fifth/sixth grade recreation department football team.
“Night games create an unrivaled experience, whether it be football, track, soccer or field hockey,” said Lisbon’s varsity football coach Chris Kates. “The stadium light project is something that the entire community can rally behind.”
A page has been created on Facebook — Lisbon Athletics Stadium Light Project — to document the progress. A PayPal link has also been created. Nicole Sautter, Boosters president, said donations for the project can be given to the Lisbon High School Athletic Boosters through PayPal using the email “greyhoundboosters@hotmail.com.”
Additionally, the boosters are running an advertisement fundraiser to help support the lights project. This includes 3-by-5-foot signs to be displayed along fences, as well as an opportunity for print advertisement in athletic programs.
