LISBON — Lisbon American Legion Post 158, 10 Webster Road, recently hosted motorcycle riders at a summer biker rally. Historian Brian Govang noted this was a long-awaited event.
“It was a first for us and an honor to host a state event like the Riders Summer Rally; we were going to make the most of it,” Govang said. He said post members had been planning for 100 riders, but the weather forecast for that weekend was dismal.
“We would just have to make the best of it and see what happens.”
The first riders trickled in about noon Friday, July 27. Then others began arriving “not in the multitudes we had expected, but in twos and threes, but they were coming,” Govang said. Friday afternoon and evening were relatively quiet, with about a dozen more riders arriving.
Cooks Vaughn Simard and Rusty Pomelow were standing at the ready. That evening hot dogs and hamburgers were on the menu.
Saturday, Govang said, “was kind of dismal and overcast. So again we were wondering how many of the American Legion Riders would make the trip to Lisbon.”
By 11 a.m., there were about 60 bikes all lined up in the parking lot, he added, estimating the total number of bikes to be 75 by the end of the day.
The meal included barbecued chicken, corn-on-the-cob, a veggie, baked potato, salad and dessert. Proceeds from the meals will be used for charities and scholarships, Govang noted.
