LISBON — Scott Gaiason, a 20-year Lisbon resident and native Mainer, has formally announced his candidacy for the House seat in District 56, representing Lisbon. Gaiason has been reaching out, at the grass-roots level, listening to voters and shaping his platform to be one truly representative of the voices of the community.
He has heard many perspectives that echo his own beliefs on issues such as better access to quality health care, tax relief, attracting new business to the area, protecting our environment, and strengthening our school system.
Gaiason is an independent democrat with deep roots in Maine. His grandparents owned a home in Auburn where he spent considerable time working alongside his grandfather, who operated a wholesale florist business. That experience gave the him a bird’s-eye view of the work it takes to be a successful small business owner. He believes small business is the backbone of the economy and will work to create an environment in Lisbon, ripe with opportunities, for new or expanding retail and service businesses to come into the community and flourish. He also will actively pursue opportunities for community development that serve the diverse population Lisbon has become. Gaiason served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War, and he vows be a tenacious advocate for veterans’ rights.
“I have learned much in my recent conversations with Lisbon residents. I have learned that, in overwhelming numbers and as a community, we seek progressive change for Lisbon that is long overdue. We need a new vision, a fresh perspective, and a strong committed voice to lead Lisbon forward. We cannot create the momentum and engage stakeholders with the same tired voices and single-minded (lack of) leadership of the past. Lisbon needs a unifying force, someone who will bring the community together, welcome differing views and vigorous debate, find the commonalities among the differences, and work across the aisle to create policy that benefits all,” Gaiason states. “Lisbon voters are clear that they want Lisbon to be a community where our children are well educated and can compete shoulder-to-shoulder for scholarships and jobs with students from areas better resourced. Lisbon needs a leader who values education, above self-interests, and believes teachers should be paid a worthy wage. These are beliefs I share with Lisbon residents, and I know that any more years of status quo, same-old same-old, will not bring these things about.”
