LISBON — About 50 Boy Scouts participated in Cub Scout Pack 109’s Pinewood Derby Jan. 20 at Holy Trinity Church.
Scouts from first to fifth grade, who attend the Lisbon Community School and Open Door Christian Academy, selected designs, carved rectangular blocks of wood into cars, sanded them down to be smooth, painted designs, affixed tires, and added weights to enter the competition, which has strict guidelines.
The car had to weigh five ounces or less, use Boy Scout approved tires, unmodified axles, and fly like the wind.
First the competitors were pitted against others of like ages — four groups of roughly 12 scouts. The six best from each group went head-to-head, regardless of age, to compete in the championship rounds. There were five winners in all; four won the races, and one had the best looking car. So while the boys were hoping for a win on the track, judges walked around and took a look at the cars to determine which one was the most intricate, creative and best built.
Family members were not left out either. Siblings and parents were allowed to compete in a family showdown resulting in Sophia Kuhl being named fastest family member. Interestingly enough, Sophia might become the pack’s first ever girl member, as the Boy Scouts of America have decided girls may now join the BSA.
Every Scout lost at least once, and every Scout congratulated the victors of each race with high fives; in the end, Jacob Parsons took first place, Kolby Miller took second, Gregory Hauger took third, Logan Diaz was fourth, and Robert Lawler took “Best in Show.” For more information about Cub Scout Pack 109, check them out on Facebook.
