LISBON — The Lisbon High School Drama club will perform the dark, witty and Tony Award-winning tale of love, murder and revenge set against the backdrop of 19-century London, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (High School Edition), on the weekend of Oct. 27 through 29.
The performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the high school, 2 Sugg Drive.
The musical tells the story of barber Benjamin Barker, also known as Sweeney Todd, and his revenge on the scheming judge who unjustly imprisoned him for 15 years and destroyed his family.
He teams up with Mrs. Lovett, a meat-pie baker, in a diabolical partnership that nearly succeeds in giving him vengeance and making her rich.
While the characters may be shocking, they are also intensely human. Each is seeking love and acceptance in a changing, challenging world. There are the young lovers, Anthony and Johanna; an Italian barber, Pirelli and his young ward Tobias, Mrs. Lovett, down on her luck, but ever optimistic that she’ll find love at last; the sinister Judge Turpin; Todd himself whose single-minded pursuit of revenge leads to heartbreak; a well as a company of ragged Londoners who tell the tale.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, the show has become a musical theatter staple since its Broadway premiere in 1979. Tickets are $8 for the general public, and are $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be bought at the door beginning 45 minutes before the performance.
