LISBON FALLS — Old-time Lisbon natives Noyes Lawrence and Merton Ricker will team up at the next Lisbon Historical Society meeting to take attendees back to the days when the two of them were growing up in Lisbon, Lisbon Center and Lisbon Falls.
Their presentation will be a virtual “walking tour” of the three villages as they were in the 1940s. They will feature stores and business long gone and the characters who had most interesting interactions with their customers in times past.
The program is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Marion T. Morse Center, 18 School St., with doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Starting at Peppermint Corner with Cora Gowell, the famous “candy lady,” Ricker and Lawrence will “trolley” down through Lisbon and Lisbon Center, ending on Main Street in Lisbon Falls. There they will focus on places such as the Met Theater, Bauer’s Bakery, the Ben Franklin Five & Ten, Roberts Drug Store and other landmarks of the past.
Media specialist Earl Williams has unearthed many old photos from the era to illustrate the talk. Some of the colorful murals of Frank Gross will be used to show his version of the street scenes of the era. The presenters will also encourage those attending to interact with them in recalling businesses and their details in order to round out their presentation with more vivid recollections from the past.
