LITCHFIELD — Andrew Day, a student at Oak Hill High School in Wales, was selected to attend the 2017 Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders, which is for students who are interested in continuing their education in science, engineering, technology and math fields.
Students from across the U.S. who have a 3.5 GPA or above were eligible to attend. He is the son of Allister Day and Shareen and Jim Thompson, all of Litchfield. Because Day, who will be a junior when the high school year starts in the fall, has a 3.6 GPA, he was presented with the Academy’s Award of Excellence, according to his mother. The conference took place June 29 to July 1 at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
Day was nominated by John C. Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology, according to a news release from the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologits.
Day raised $1,605 to help pay for tuition, room and board, and travel costs for the conference, and his family thanks the community and friends for their support.
Day was also accepted into the computer science program at Lewiston Regional Tech Center as part of his upcoming junior year curriculum. His academic goal is to attend college specializing in computer technology, perhaps the cyber security field, his mother said. He also enjoys boating, snowmobiling, hiking, playing volleyball and video games.
