Middle schoolers and their teachers honor veterans

SABATTUS — Two Oak Hill Middle School teachers and their advisory students went out to breakfast Friday, May 25, at Rt. 197 Diner in Litchfield, where they ate with veterans from American Legion William R. Bold Post 0181 and had a chance to ask questions and learn all about their time in the service.

After breakfast, the students headed to Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Sabattus, where they met with Ron Caron and Don Caron of American Legion Harry J. Conway Post 135. The students learned how to properly place flags on veterans’ graves and offer them a respectful salute. The legionnaires are very thankful to the kids for doing so much work in such a short time, and the family members of the fallen veterans always appreciate coming to visit on Memorial Day and seeing their loved ones’ graves looking sharp and dignified with an American flag.

“The day proved to be a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about patriotism, civic duty and community service,” noted teacher Aimee Lanteigne “We are honored to do this annually for our local veterans and hope to keep the tradition alive for many years to come.”
