LISBON — The Lisbon Historical Society will feature a program by Maine master naturalists Dan and Celeste Crowley on Wednesday, June 14.
The pair will discuss natural wonders of the Maine woods, including how to use the appropriate tools and techniques to accurately identify many species of wildlife, from the smallest fern to the largest glacial erratic, and present a display of local natural specimens from their research. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. with refreshments at the close of the meeting.
The Crowleys are 2017 graduates of the Maine Master Naturalist program, and their talk will also cover the preservation and conservation of Maine’s natural resources, which they put into practice on their own piece of land on the banks of the Androscoggin River in Durham. In place of a lawn, they have plantings and multiple habitats that provide opportunities for wildlife to thrive all year long.
The naturalist program, similar to the Maine Master Gardener program, requires 30 hours of volunteer time. The Crowleys don’t claim to be experts, but “informed generalists,” and they encourage their audience to ask questions and will do their best to give accurate answers, according to a news release from the historical society.
