Children’s fishing derby set for May 20

LITCHFIELD — The Litchfield Sportsmen’s Club is hosting its 42nd annual Children’s Fishing Derby and Casting Competition Saturday, May 20, at the group’s on-site pond, 2261 Hallowell Road. The competitions are open to all children ages 5 to 15. There is no charge to enter the fishing derby and only a small fee to enter the casting competition.

The fishing derby has two age groups — 5-9 and 10-15. The child catching the largest fish (determined by weight only) in each age category will receive a cash prize and trophy. Second place will receive a trophy, and all kids will receive a prize for entering. The awards ceremony will begin at noon.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. The 5-9 year-olds will fish from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the 10-15 year olds will fish from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult and must bring their own poles and gear (only worms and artificial lures allowed). Non-resident kids over the age of 12 must have a valid non-resident license.

There is one group for the casting competition: ages 5-15. The winner of the casting competition will receive a trophy. The casting competition will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Each year the Litchfield Sportsmen’s Club stocks its on-site pond with trout specifically for the children’s fishing derby. Food and drink will be available in the clubhouse.
