LISBON — Dozens of Scouts participated in the Cub Scout Pack 109 Pine Wood Derby on March 4. Scouts from first through fifth grade carved cars out of wooden blocks, which had to meet very specific criteria, then raced them down the track at Holy Trinity Church.
The cars had to weigh less than 5 ounces, use unmodified axles “and fly like the wind,” said a news release from the pack. “After carving, sanding, nailing, melting led, and painting their cars, the boys went head-to-head with their den members, pitting same- aged kids against each other.”
Then, the boys were ready for the finals, for which 24 qualified. The next round pitted racers against each other regardless of age. There were six trophy winners, and one or two Scouts advanced to the district level competition, which is a precursor to the statewide showdown.
There was an additional Scout competition based primarily on the appearance of the cars, the release said. Winners were Ryan Bussiere, first place; Aizyk Miller, second place; Henri Fiddler, third place; Emmaus Kay, fourth place; Chris Reed, fifth place; Devin Weeks, Best of Show. There was also a short race for family members, homemade goods and a free lunch.
“It was an awesome example of good clean fun, competition and good sportsmanship,” the release said.
