LISBON FALLS — Kate Madore remembers sitting around the conference table of a small business in Lisbon in February 2020, brainstorming ideas for town’s annual Moxie Festival, which was scheduled to be held later that year.
“It was an awesome example of the creative process,” she said. “Where you trust the people you’re working with enough that you are willing to throw out ideas that might not work, knowing the next person will move that idea forward into something greater than the sum of its parts.”
The team left the table that day having settled on the theme “Find Your Fire.” No one could have expected plans to be cut short the following month when the global coronavirus pandemic shut down the festival for two years.
In early 2022, organizers pre-empted many other outdoor events that had also taken a two-year hiatus by announcing the Moxie Festival would return in full force this summer, to be eld on July 8, 9 and 10.
News of the decision to return to all the traditions of the celebration was picked up by national news outlets including NPR and the Washington Post as one of the first outdoor celebrations to return post-pandemic.
Madore was also part of the team that met at the table again to agree that the 2022 theme could be none other than “Find Your Fire…Again.”
“We felt that what had been most taken from us [by the pandemic] was that sense of who we are and what ignites us,” she said. “To find your fire again is to find your spirit, that thing that makes you unique. And I don’t know that there’s a better way to describe what Moxie is to all who love it.”
