DURHAM — Mitchell Berkowitz has been appointed interim town manager, to take the place of Kathy Tombarelli, who resigned in February, effective March 15.
Berkowitz will assist the select board with the search and hiring process for a new town manager.
Berkowitz has many years of experience in a variety of municipal leadership positions, including Berlin, New Hampshire, superintendent of recreation and parks, as well as city manager for more than 24 years; Colchester, Vermont, town manager; Gray town manager; and Bridgton town manager. Since he retired, he has been a consultant and interim town manager on eight occasions for other communities in Maine, often helping them find new town managers.
His pre-retirement career spanned more than 50 years of employment experience in federal and municipal government as well as nonprofit agencies. His experiences include human resource management, financing, planning, service delivery systems and customers, facilitating community and committee work. He has been a trustee to the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland and is trustee to the Gray Water District.
He lives in Gray, with his wife, Sally. The have three daughters and six grandchildren.
Tombarelli was the town’s first town manager and resigned Feb. 15. She thanked the town staff and department heads, saying they were a pleasure to work with.
