Lisbon Cub Scout Pack 109 camping weekend has some first-evers

LISBON — Cub Scout Pack 109 kicked off the school year Sept. 27 with its annual overnight camping trip at Knights of Columbus field in Lisbon.

The event began earlier than usual because the Web 1 Patrol, for the first time ever, spent the night as a single den with no other pack members present. The result for that den was multiple badges earned, including their Webelos Walkabout (three-mile hike), a new Scout earning his Bobcat and Whittlin’ Chip, and a few songs being learned by newer members that would be used in a campfire later on. The Webelos got to cook their own meals and practice starting their own fires prior to other pack members arriving.
Once the pack got there, the next afternoon, Scouts could be seen and heard everywhere. New members to the pack acquainted themselves with their surroundings and set their individual campsites up with help from their Scouts. All dens could then be seen rotating between Scout activities, fun games and T-shirt coloring.
The newest den, Tigers, earned their Bobcat rank and checked off requirements despite this being their first outing. The Wolves earned multiple badges as well. Another change saw the new Bear Den serving tacos for dinner, forgoing the pack’s traditional spaghetti meal. The Bears prepped the dining area, the kitchen, and the food. They cooked it and then set up a serving line for all to move through. A dutch oven dessert was prepared by members of the Wolf Den to dovetail dinner. The Arrow of Light den worked on required skills and discussed their transitions to Troop level scouting.
The event culminated with a pack campfire that was led by Captain Campfire. The notorious campfire superhero jumped into action by singing songs and motivating others to do the same. The Web1’s, Bears, and Wolves took turns singing songs and acting out skits while Captain Campfire inspired them to be louder. And boy did they get louder. Scouts who had not previously sung in front of others and would normally shy away from public speaking, stood in front of the entire pack and rocked the Knights of Columbus. In all, it was a great event for all whom attended.
