LISBON FALLS — Reuben Wheeler will speak at the Lisbon Historical Society on land title history and how it shaped the community on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Wheeler is a professional land surveyor who has worked in the greater Lisbon area since 1998. He has taken an interest in early land title history and how it has shaped our local communities. As settlement began in the “back country,” the squatters often conflicted with the “owners from away,” with land surveyors caught in the middle. Wheler will discuss how, through the use of modern technology and data sources, the modern land surveyor often rediscovers lost bits of local history by retracing the steps of the original surveyors.
As the interest in rural Maine living has surged in the last 50 years, Wheeler will also discuss how this was affected by the population drop experienced in rural Maine after the Civil War.
Raised and living in neighboring Bowdoin, with strong Lisbon roots, Wheeler is involved in building community, developing pride in our local history and preserving fading memories of the past. He is a member of the Bowdoin Historical Society, and an acting trustee of several Bowdoin cemeteries. As a seventh-generation Bowdoin resident, Wheeler’s roots trace back through the early days when the north part of Lisbon was part of Bowdoin. Through the past 21 years of private practice as a professional land surveyor, Wheelerhas rediscovered how modern land use trends have been shaped by the past.
The talk is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
