LITCHFIELD — Maine Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Walt Whitcomb kicked off the Read ME Agriculture program recently at the Carrie Ricker Middle School. The program was developed in 2008 by Maine Ag in the Classroom and funded by the agriculture specialty license plate. More than 150 volunteer readers across Maine helped celebrate National Agriculture Week from March 19 to 25 in more than 700 pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade classrooms, according to a news release from the state agriculture department.
Whitcomb read “What’s in the Garden?” to JoDell Warren’s third-grade class. Students correctly guessed garden vegetables on each page of the riddle book. Whitcomb also explained what he does as commissioner and as a farmer.
