LISBON — During spring vacation, Girl Scout Troop 2080 capped off a two-year journey to arrive at the city of their wildest dreams — New York City.
The group of fifth-grade girls earned money by selling cookies all over Maine, facilitating an indoor crafts fair, and conducting multiple bottle drives and other fundraisers. They saved, saved and saved until they finally had enough money to do everything they wanted to do.
While in the Big Apple, the girls climbed multiple steps on Liberty Island and did not stop until they were at Lady Liberty’s pedestal point looking out into the harbor. Afterwards, they ferried to Ellis Island and embraced the nation’s heritage of immigration, discovering how the nation became the “melting pot” it is today.
For additional entertainment, the troop took in a Broadway production called “School of Rock.” They visited Times Square, Wall Street and the M&M Store, as well as many other notable sites. The next day they visited Rockefeller Center and were broadcasted into America’s living rooms via the Today Show.
These girls were in living rooms across the country, answering Al Roker’s questions, handing out free Thin Mints, and getting New Yorkers to down some Moxie — to which the girls could be heard chanting “Do it! Do it! Do it!”
The Scouts have already started planning their next trip, this time to Washington, D.C. These Scouts were able to make this memorable trip through support from citizens and families in the Lisbon area.Taking part in this trip were Alexyss Baird, Hannah Card, Sage McKellick, Irelyn Goodell, Ella Glover, Viola Perkins, Sierra Cummins, Samantha Doody-Remington, Emily Schrieber, Heidi Baird and Denise Laverdiere.
