LISBON — Lisbon Cub Scout Pack 109 and it’s Wolf Den made November a month to be thankful for giving,” participating in a number of community events.
The Scouts participated in the Maine Honor Flight, shaking hands of off-boarding veterans and celebrating the veterans returning to Maine.
The following weekend, the Wolves picked up trash along the sidewalks in downtown Lisbon, for those businesses that work hard every day in that area.
During the week of Veterans Day, the Wolves conducted a brief ceremony during a pack meeting, with a special remembrance for three veterans who died in combat; two of them from Lisbon. Brief biographies of the three were read and stones, representing the veterans, were displayed and followed by a moment of silence.
The Wolves then hiked the stones to the highest bluff in Bradbury State Park, as requested by the widow of the youngest Lisbon veteran on one of the stones, and paid tribute to those veterans at The Summit. The Summit Project can be found online and the stones are maintained at the Portland Military Entrance Processing Station.
The Wolves plan to perform another community service on Dec. 9, singing Christmas carols and creating Christmas cards for residents of the Lamp Alzheimer’s Residential Care Facility in Lisbon.
The Scouts practiced skills like reading maps, packing for a hike, predicting the weather, and dressing smartly while they hiked and while they cleaned the down town area. Their biggest epiphany was was learning what it meant to be a “cheerful giver” and remembering to be thankful for what they have been given.
