LISBON FALLS — Charles Plummer, noted local historian, will speak about “Pvt. William Berry’s First-Person Account of His Early Life and Civil War Experiences” to members and guests at the Lisbon Historical Society meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Marion T. Morse Center on School Street.
William Berry was born in Brunswick Oct. 18, 1841, and lived in Bangor, Lisbon Falls, Lewiston Falls, Minot Corner, Poland Corner, Welchville, and Greenwood. He served with two Maine regiments during the Civil War, and following his discharge from the Army in 1865, he became a resident of Lisbon Falls, where he died May 16, 1895, at the age of 53.
In 1872, he wrote a detailed account of his early life and Civil War experiences while serving with the 23rd Maine Infantry Regiment and the First Maine Heavy Artillery. Plummer has a copy of William Berry’s first-person account of his early life and Civil War experiences, a copy of his discharge from the Army, as well as copies of the applications that he and his wife submitted to the War Department for pensions. He will share these and The Society’s rooms are at the rear of the building; parking is also behind the building.
