Cub Scouts have busy summer ‘camporee’

SABATTUS – Cub Scout Pack 109 of Lisbon Falls recently wrapped up its annual Cub Scout “camporee” at Camp Gustin in Sabattus. The Scouts, ranging in age from 7-11 years-old, gained a host of new tricks after being taught by local Eagle Scouts, members of Troop 109, the pack’s leaders, and their own parents.

The classes taught included orienteering, hiking, swimming, outdoor cooking, knot tying/lashing, and campsite building. They sang songs, conducted skits, and started roaring campfires that lasted throughout the night. They even watched a projected movie outside. The pack conducts these events periodically, and this year, their cooking class included pizzas in a wood stone fire and a dutch oven cobbler.

They used compasses during their orienteering and shot azimuths to navigate from point to point while hiking. Overall, they hiked about 1.5 miles, starting each day with a “polar dip” and ending with a swim. In addition to their skits and nightly songs, the boys sung cadences while marching out of camp, conducted flag ceremonies, and paid respect to country and God. The boys will be camping again in August and September.
