LISBON — The annual Moxie Festival turned out to be a great place to recruit new members for American Legion Post 158.
“This was a banner day all because of the Frank Anicetti Memorial Moxie Parade,” said post historian Brian Govang.”One of the potential new members even talked of his father, who had been best friends with Ralph Coombs — our post’s namesake. He related how Ralph had been killed by a Japanese sniper while trying to save a fellow squad member.”
Govang said the man Coombs was trying to save had been shot by the same sniper. “So Ralph Coombs is not only our namesake but also a military hero,” he added.
While signing up new members, many from Post 158 renewed old friendships, Govang said, noting retired Lisbon police Lt. Dan Michel and retired police chief Dave Brooks stopped by the booth to shake hands. Commander Ron Saindon also presented a $1,250 check to Retired United State Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, a disabled veteran, for his charitable work through the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed to benefit and assist wounded and injured veterans and their families.
All in all it was a great day for the Lisbon American Legion Post 158, Govang stressed.
