FAIRFIELD – After slow start to the 2022-23 basketball season, the Lawrence girls’ team got on track, ultimately entering the post-season tournament, compiling a 19-3 record, and winning the Class A Championship when they beat Brunswick, 58-43, at the Augusta Civic Center on March 2 for the Class A state championship.
The Bulldogs last appeared in the state final in 2016. This year’s victory was the sixth Gold Ball for the Lawrence girls, having won four straight in the early 90s with the great Cindy Blodgett, who went on to star at the University of Maine and beyond.
This year’s Lawrence 15-point win came partially from seven 3-pointers made by Hope Bouchard, Alicen Higgins and Elizabeth Crommett. Bouchard totaled 25 points, with Maddie Provost adding 16, Higgins had 7, Brianna Poulin and Crommett, 5 each.
Taking advantage of great rebounding, the Bulldogs also netted many second chances under the boards. After a couple of opening moment jitters, the girls played a consistently good game on both ends of the court, holding the lead for the rest of the game.
Bouchard, a senior, was game high scorer, with 25 points. The senior Bouchard, an all-round athlete, was also instrumental in the Bulldogs’ Class B field hockey state championship in the fall. She was awarded the Miss Maine Field Hockey for her performance in that sport.
Brunswick capped off a stellar season with their runner-up trophy.
Maddy Werner was top scorer for Brunswick, with 16 points, followed by Alexis Morin with 10, Dakota Shipley with 9, and Sophia Morin and Kelsie Carlton, with 4 points each.
The Dragons were 19-2 on the regular season, their only losses to Gray-New Gloucester by 1-point and to Oxford Hills, the eventual Class AA state champion, by 4 points.
