BRUNSWICK – Midcoast Youth Theater will perform “The Wizard of Oz,” in May, an all-ages production with a cast of more than 90 local actors.
The audience will follow Dorothy (Meghan Rivard and Maddy Sweet) on her journey to Oz. Along the way, she’ll meet a cast of characters familiar to the audience, including the Cowardly Lion (Eric Kelley), the Tin Man (Cam Prophett), the Scarecrow (Carly Mershon), Glinda the Good Witch of the North (Amber Palleschi), the Wicked Witch of the West (Linda Gardiner) and of course the man behind the curtain, The Wizard of Oz (Michael Millett).
Dorothy’s search for a way home reminds us all of the power of friendship, belief in oneself and belief in others.
“Everyone knows the story from the movie, so the audience’s expectation is high,” director Tammy Verreault said. She said a song that was cut from the movie, “The Jitterbug,” is included and “will be a show stopper.”
She also said that audiences will help become part of the poppy flower scene and the witch will melt in spectacular fashion.
“Our local Toto dog (Zelda) and over 90 cast members of all ages from 4 and up have been in rehearsal mode since the end of February and can’t wait to bring the magic of the Wizard of Oz to Crooker Theater,” Verreault sadded.
Performances are May 4-7 in Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School.
