Discussion Project begins March 14 at Lewiston Public Library

LEWISTON—The Lewiston Public Library will host a three-session book discussion project, “What if community is the key to our resilience?” beginning March 14.
The three-session program, facilitated by Samara Cole Doyon, will focus on” The Water Knife,” by Paolo Bacigalupi; “Vigil Harbor,” by Julia Glass; and “Parable of the Sower,” by Octavia Butler. Participants will engage with each other on the big questions that affect everyone. What if humanity is both its own nemesis and savior? What if we read these texts as both a parable about our present and a warning for our future? What if the future is ours to collectively create?
The group will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 and April 4 in the Jeanne Couture Room at the library, 200 Lisbon St. There will be a tri-community discussion of “Parable of the Sower,” Tuesday, April 25, that will also include groups from Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick and Bangor Public Library.

The project is part of Parable Path Maine, a framework for community organizing and artistic engagement based on “Parable of the Sower.” It is led by Toshi Reagon, Bowdoin College’s Joseph McKeen 2022-23 visiting fellow, and is supported by Maine Humanities Council, Indigo Arts Alliance and Bowdoin College.
