BANGOR – Steve Maki, owner of Spruce Mountain Pharmacy, in Jay, was the keynote speaker at Husson University School of Pharmacy 14th annual White Coat Ceremony on Oct. 16.
AT the ceremony, first-year pharmacy students were presented with their white coats, marking the beginning of the professional phase of the students’ studies.
Before opening his store, Maki worked for Walgreen’s, Hannaford and Rite Aid. He has more than 25 years of experience as a pharmacist in Maine, beginning his career as a pharmacy technician for LaVerdiere’s Super Drug Store in Farmington.
Maki earned a bachelor of science in education from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1992, and a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island’s College of Pharmacy in 1996. The Maine Pharmacy Association has presented Maki with the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award and the Up-Shire Smith Innovations in Pharmacy Award. He has been a strong advocate for the profession and the future of pharmacy.
Maki makes it a point to help educate other professionals interested in becoming independent pharmacy owners. By sharing his insights and thoughts with his peers, he hopes to help mentor fellow entrepreneurs, he said. His business has served as an introductory pharmacy practice experience and advanced pharmacy practice experience site for students from the University of Rhode Island, University of New England and Husson University.
