Standish resident is UMaine Machias salutatorian

MACHIAS — Nicholas Sanborn, of Standish, has been named salutatorian for the 2022 University of Maine Machias commencement.
Sanborn joins valedictorian Yani Nganzobo, of Machias.

Sanborn is graduating with a degree in recreation and tourism management, with a focus on conservation law enforcement and natural resources. He is Outing Club president, a member of the Student Security Team, and served on the Student Senate. He has been awarded the Penobscot County Conservation Association Award, the Nathan C. & Dorothy W. Burbank Scholarship and the Edna Higgins Scholarship.
He was certified as a wilderness first responder in 2021. Last year, Sanborn interned with Windham Parks and Recreation at Dundee Park with a focus on facilities management of a park beach, as well as park administration, maintenance and improvement projects. He plans to working toward his goal of becoming a Maine game warden after graduation.
Nganzobo, who has been an international student in Machias since 2019, will graduate with a degree in business with a concentration in entrepreneurship with a certificate in HR management. She was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. She volunteers for Maine Environment Education Association and Gateway Community Services Maine and also sings in the church choir at Machias Fellowship. Last summer, she interned at Avesta Housing in Portland, and hopes to someday start a property investment company. She plans to continue her studies after graduation and pursue an MBA at the University of Maine.
University of Maine at Machias graduation will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, in the college Performing Arts Center.
