Chamberlain’s transition to war hero roundtable Jan. 13 topic

BRUNSWICK — Maine Civil War historian Brian F. Swartz will chronicle Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain’s swift transition from college professor and family man to regimental and brigade commander at the January meeting of the Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable.
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, as at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, in the Morrell Room, Curtis Public Library, 23 Pleasant St.
Swartz will draw on Chamberlain’s extensive memoirs and writings, and period sources for his most recent book, “Passing Through the Fire: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in the Civil War.”
Raised in Brewer, Swartz became passionate about the Civil War during its centennial. A newspaper reporter and editor for the last 36 years, including 27 years with the Bangor Daily News, he launched the “Maine at War” column in 2011 and the “Maine at War” blog in 2012.
