Nonprofit youth sports program looking to provide place to play

WEST GARDINER — A local nonprofit youth sports organizatoin has been struggling to find gyms for its teams to play basketball since the pandemic began, and is looking for community health.
Atlantic Youth Sports Inc. is run by Shana Eppersonas a nonprofit athletic organization that has been serving local communities since 2011. The group is fundraising to build an outdoor basketball court, as the program has struggled to find gyms in the area. With school gyms being restricted for use, there are very few places for the kids who take advantage of the programs to stay active and healthy.
AYS has made it a mission to “Make Athletes Matter Together” and have set a three-phased goal to build facilities to help make the mission a reality and to address this lack of facilities in the area.
Phase 1 is to build an outdoor basketball court; Phase 2 is to build an outdoor field for softball, lacrosse and volleyball; and Phase 3 is to build an indoor gymnasium with basketball courts and a training gym, all of which will be built on Indiana Road.
Epersonas hopes to complete all phases in the next three years; with the first beginning in May.
