BATH — The Chocolate Church Arts Center has added two new members to its Board of Trustees.
The nonprofit arts organization hopes that by expanding its board it can grow its capacity to present the arts and preserve its historic building, the former Central Church, built in 1847.
Brett Johnson, co-owner and chief creative director of Maine Street Design Co, was unanimously approved as a new board member in November. Johnson is a 17th generation Mainer and has a deep personal connection with the Chocolate Church Arts Center, having served as apprentice to Jack Doepp, the theatrical designer who founded the organization. Of Doepp, who died in 1999, Johnson said, “He gave me my start as a scenic artist which has evolved into an interior design practice. The CCAC Board gives me an opportunity to give back to this vital community asset.”
At its December meeting, the board unanimously approved the addition of Kimberly Becker. Becker will also be a volunteer curator for the CCAC art gallery. Becker is a professional artist who recently returned to Bath from the Boston area. She has a degree in textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design, an masters in fine arts from Heartwood College of Art, and is a Paris-trained haute couture embroiderer.
Becker curated the exhibition “A Woman’s Place,” which was exhibited in the Chocolate Church gallery in March 2017. More recently she curated “Hunting Positive,” featuring 14 New England artists. Her “Dolls for Change” project raises money to support educating girls in Uganda.
