Family, friends of Woodlands in Hallowell residents hold Thanksgiving drive-by

HALLOWELL — Since residents of Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell can’t celebrate Thanksgiving in person with loved ones because of the COVID-19 pandemic, family and friends came to them this year.
Hundreds of family and friends decorated their cars and participated in a lively Thanksgiving parade for residents. Organized by the Executive Director Vicki Towne, the parade was in lieu of traditional celebrations in order to keep residents, staff and families safe amid the pandemic.
“During this time of social distancing, the staff and I thought it would be amazing for families and friends to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved ones, in a unique way,” Towne said. “Parades are always a fun way to celebrate the holidays. What better way to celebrate than by bringing the parade to the residents?”
Families arrived at a staging area and decorated their vehicles with streamers, paint, balloons and banners before being led by tje Hallowell Fire Department p Winthrop Street to the senior living community.
A total of 210 vehicles participated, driving through the circular driveway and honking, waving and blowing kisses to the delight of residents watching safely from behind large windows. Residents from both assisted living and memory care communities watched the 45-minute parade, joined by staff.
“Family members, staff and the community as a whole really came together to create a heartwarming event for the residents we serve,” said Towne. “Being able to witness the joy that this parade brought to the residents was absolutely incredible.”
