BRUNSWICK — Midcoast Senior College has announced registration dates for enrolling in the college’s Fall Term II courses, which run online from Nov. 9 until Dec. 18.
Registration began online on Oct. 12. This term’s courses include “The Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins,” “African-Americans: The Civil War and Its Aftermath,” “Introduction to Modern Architecture,” “Talking Trash in Today’s World,” “The Rights of Native Peoples,” “James Joyce’s ‘Dubliners,'” “Italian Opera,” “Final (end of life) Directives,” “Ocean Energy: Tide Mills” (the history and current use of tidal dams), “Reckoning with Racism,” and “MSC Singers” (a chorus group).
A student must also be a member of MSC or another senior college to take courses. For information on membership, fees and how to enroll in a class, visit midcoastseniorcollege.org/”>midcoastseniorcollege.org.
In its 20 years of serving Midcoast seniors, Midcoast Senior College has held classes in traditional classrooms. It has developed a reputation for excellent teaching and interesting courses. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the college was faced with the challenge of serving its students, who are in the at-risk senior citizen demographic. All classes are now held via Zoom.
Donna Marshall, the executive director of MSC, is pleased with the response by seniors to shifting to an on-line platform for delivery of classes. “We are extremely gratified to see the support and the willingness to adapt to this learning environment by our members. We’ve got a terrific board of directors who have set a positive tone during a challenging time.”
According to Victor Papacosma, a faculty member and co-chair of the college’s Curriculum Committee, faculty members were open to the idea of Zoom classes as another teaching tool. “They thought about it, talked to Donna about the details of Zoom, and adapted to the Zoom teaching environment. Zoom has become an adjunct to the College mission,” he said.
Those new to Zoom can contact Clare Durst, an MSC board member, who is happy to instruct participants on how to use it (free of charge). She can be contacted at brigull@gmail.com. For all other questions, call MSC at 207-725-4900.
