BRUNSWICK — Ohio native Scott Mingus Jr., whose Civil War ancestry includes a great-great grandfather who served as drummer and rifleman in the 51st Ohio Infantry when he was 15 years old, is the guest speaker for the Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable on Thursday, April 9.
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, is at 7 p.m. in the Curtis Memorial Library Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St.
Addressing the topic “The Second Battle of Winchester,” Mingus will discuss the controversial decision of Gen. Robert H. Milroy that led to a loss of half his force and an inglorious rout from the battlefield. However, many Union soldiers who fought at the Second Winchester believed their three-day resistance delayed the Confederate army from entering Pennsylvania long enough to buy time for the Army of the Potomac to arrive and defeat Lee at Gettysburg. Mingus has written 22 books about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad, as well as several articles for Gettysburg Magazine and other historical journals. In addition to several other literary awards, he received the Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. Literary Prize for Confederate History. Now a retired research scientist with the pulp and paper industry, Mingus visited Maine often when he was with the industry.
