Free ‘learning while aging’ lunch and learn is March 23

BRUNSWICK — It’s a fact that a person who continues learning into older adulthood could extend their life by up to 25 percent. Midcoast Senior College, which provides non-credit academic courses and other educational events for people 50 years and older to continue learning, will present a lunch and learn on its offerings at noon, Monday, March 23, at People Plus, 35 Union St.
Tony Belmont, of the senior college, will talk about its courses, programs and special events and how participants can continue learning no matter what their age is. The college is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
The talk is free and open to the public. Bring your lunch and the college provides drinks, chips and dessert. Belmont is a retired internist living in Wiscasset, who also retired from the Navy in 1985 with 20 years of service. Aside from a variety of other posts, he has held teaching appointments at several medical schools, including Cornell Medical College, George Washington University Medical School, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the University of Oklahoma.
Since relocating to Maine, Belmont has continued to be active in medical matters, but not in clinical practice.
He interviews and counsels pre-med students at Bowdoin College, attends Medical Grand Rounds at Maine Medical Center, occasionally speaks to groups interested in his White House experiences and has been president of the local Hospice organization. He has been active in Midcoast Senior College for many years and joined its board in 2013. He was president of the Board from July 2015 until July 2017.
