Civil War chaplains March 12 Chamberlain Roundtable topic

BRUNSWICK — Retired naval chaplain, the Rev. Alan Andraeas will speak about “Shepherds of the Sea: Naval Chaplains in the Civil War” at the Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, held in the Morrell Room, Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.
During the Civil War chaplains labored aboard frigates, at shipyards, and even taught at the Naval Academy. Who were they? What was their training? How were they appointed? Did they have rank? What was their work? Andraeas writes that “when a chaplain went to sea and conducted worship, the Church Pennant was the only flag permitted to fly above the national ensign, and the only flag to which the ensign showed such submission.”
Andraeas resides in Dennysville, where his homestead is used for a retreat and chapel ministry. Woodworking, kayaking, and making artisanal goat cheese are among his many interests.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
