GARDINER — The Rotary Club of Gardiner was recently awarded a “Toiletries and Toe Covers” grant to assist the area’s youth with basic toiletries and footwear.
The club, working with the Rotary Interact Club at Gardiner Area High School and Middle Schools, found that there was a need for shoes, boots and toiletries for the students and families of Maine School Administrative District 11. Although the food/clothing bank at GAHS that the Interact Club started last year gets many donations, toiletries and shoes/boots are items that were desperately needed and are not always part of the grocery and clothing donations made to the program.
The rotary was awarded the $4,000 grant through Rotary International District 7790, and the money will assist the school district’s many youths with basic toiletries and footwear.
In addition to the grant money, a monetary donation was made by the First Baptist Church of Gardiner, more than 100 pairs of sneakers were donated by New Balance in Norridgewock and more than 50 pairs of boots were donated by Gardiner Rotarians and Camden National Bank. Many pairs of sneakers were distributed over the holidays to families in need and boots and sneakers have been delivered to the four elementary schools and the middle school.
