Photography in the Civil War era Chamberlain Roundtable Feb. 13 topic

BRUNSWICK — “Photography, Memory, and the Civil War” will be the topic for the Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Morrell Room at Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.
The event is free and open to the public.
Invented in 1839, photography came of age during the Civil War. In this illustrated presentation guest speaker Libby Bischof will discuss the history and uses of photography leading up to the war, the role of the photograph during the war, and the many ways in which the photograph has influenced the nation’s memory of the war. Special attention will be given to the relationship between photographs and illustrated print journalism of the mid-19th century.
Bischof is professor of history and the executivedirector of the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education at the University of Southern Maine. Specializing in visual culture, including postcards and photography especially, she is a frequent lecturer around the state on Maine history.
