5th Maine Regiment topic at Nov. 14 Chamberlain Roundtable

BRUNSWICK — Curtis Mildner will talk about “The Soldiers in the Windows: 5th Maine Regiment,” at the Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable, 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Curtis Memorial Library, in the Morrell Room.
The lecture is free and open to the public, and the library is at 23 Pleasant St.
Mildner will tell of the history of Peaks Island’s Fifth Maine Regiment Hall, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and one of the last and best-preserved Civil War reunion halls in the nation. It was built in 1888 and is a gem of a place, filled with artifacts, history and stories.
The Fifth Maine Regimental Hall was funded by the purchase of shares and by the sale of memorial windows, each dedicated to a solider of the Fifth Maine Regiment. Poignant stories are associated in the windows and Milder will share a few of them. He will tell why the hall was built, who built it and how it was used.
Mildner is a long-time member of the Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable, with more than two decades of interest in the Fifth Maine Volunteer Regiment. He is a reenactor with the Third Maine Regiment, an active member of the American Battlefield Trust, and a trustee of the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum on Peaks Island.
