Free multi-generational family insight series set for November in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK — A free four-part series designed to bring new insights to family relationships will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St., throughout November.
The series, “Sharing Your Childhood: A Family System Workshop,” aims to improve communication within families by looking through generations for an examination of the family dynamic. During the workshop, children (10 years or older) are invited to attend with parents, grandparents and other family members. Child care is available for children under 10.
The sessions will be held on the first three Sundays in November (3, 10, 17) along with a fourth date to be determined by participants. All meetings will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The session topics include:
SESSION I (NOV. 3): This session will help participants “connect with the childhood in all of us.”
SESSION II (NOV. 10): This session will be focused on viewing the structure of the nuclear family and examining how all of the parts can work together effectively.
SESSION III (NOV. 17): Participants will view a genogram, a three to four generational assessment of family experiences, to get in touch with their family legacies.
SESSION IV (TBA): The final session will be a review of what was learned with suggested strategies to bring about constructive change.
The series will be facilitated by Larry Roy, a social worker who holds degrees from Colby College, Catholic University of America and Syracuse University. He also received postgraduate training from Georgetown University in family system theory and is a certified instructor by Effectiveness Training International. In 2000, he developed and delivered “Don’t Toss Your Teen,” a family life education program for the parents of middle schoolers in the Brunswick area and beyond. He has extensive experience as a family therapist, caseworker, family life educator, community consultant and instructor in sociology, marriage and the family.
