TOPSHAM — The Topsham Public Library has a number of events scheduled for September, including the Friends of the Topsham Public Library book sale, and the Joy of the Pen writing competition.
The book sale, which includes CDs and DVDs, is open to Friends members only from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Memberships will be available at the door; the cost of a Friends membership at the individual level is $15, with pricing options also available for seniors, families and businesses.
The sale’s public hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, and 10 a.m. to 2 .m. Sunday, Sept. 29, when books will be sold by the bag for $5 a bag.
The library will be closed for normal operation during the sale. Volunteers who’d like to assist setup or cleanup should contact Kim at kim.fletcher9@gmail.com.
The library is also accepting submissions for its annual Joy of the Pen writing competition. Only year-long Maine residents submitting previously unpublished works will be considered. The library is looking for members for its variety of adult book groups, most of which meet once a month from September to May. Groups Book Look, 11 a.m., first Tuesday of month; Great Books, 10 a.m., second Saturday of month, year-round; Men’s Book Group, 4 p.m. third Thursday of month; Mystery Reader’s Roundtable, 3 p.m. second Tuesday of month; Rare Reads, 3 p.m. third Tuesday of month; Reading Between the Panels 6 p.m., fourth Tuesday of month (comics, graphic novels).

Legos at the Library, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. Giant bins full of Legos for older kids and Duplos available for younger kids upon request.
Banned Book Week, Sept. 22 – 28: Displays of books that have been banned over the years. You might be surprised at what you see there. How many have you read?
CREA: Ecology of The Heath at Cathance River Nature Preserve, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. Master Naturalist Fred Cichocki describes the ecology of heath and other sphagnum moss wetlands that make up Topsham’s unique ecosystem.
