HALLOWELL — Parents and caregivers will not want to miss the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maine’s upcoming event, “Learning the Warning Signs of Teenage Substance Misuse,” slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at 52 Water St.
Attendees will have the opportunity to take a hands-on tour of a mock teenage bedroom, where potential signs of substance misuse will be hidden. Experts will be on hand to guide attendees through the trailer, educating participants about warning signs, potential areas of concern, and answer questions parents or caregivers may have. This event is in partnership with the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative of Maine, the Hallowell Police Department, the Augusta Police Department and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Half of mental health conditions begin by age 14, and 75% of substance use disorders develop by 27 years of age. About a third of all people experiencing mental illnesses and about half of people living with severe mental illnesses also experience substance abuse. These statistics are mirrored in the substance abuse community, where about a third of all alcohol abusers and more than half of all drug abusers report experiencing a mental illness. Maine leads the nation in youth anxiety rates and is also one of the top ten states with the highest rates of opioid-related overdose deaths.
Through support, education, and advocacy NAMI Maine is dedicated to building better lives for the one in four Mainers who are affected by mental illness. The Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative of Maine is an alliance of organizations elevating programs that have a real impact on Maine’s opioid crisis.
