Author Rice to discuss Sockalexis at Rangeley Library Sept. 4

RANGELEY — Ed Rice, author of “Baseball’s First Indian,” will be at the Rangeley Public Library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, to discuss the life and legacy of Louis Sockalexis.
Born in 1871 on Maine’s Penobscot Indian Reservation, Sockalexis is believed to be the first Native American to play Major League Baseball, and was the inspiration for the name Cleveland Indians.
Rice aims to help this baseball legend gain the recognition he deserves as a great Maine athlete both at the college level at College of the Holy Cross and in the National League with what was then known as the Cleveland Spiders.
Stop by the library or call 207-864-5529 to sign up for the program, which is free and open to the public. The library is at 7 Lake St.
