Fairfield author releases ‘Mystical Slayings’ trilogy

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield author Michael W. Huard recently completed his science fiction and fantasy trilogy, “Mystical Slayings,” which includes the books “Land of the Free,” “Hopebringers” and “Freedom.”

The series takes the reader to the far future, he 31st century, and it’s not a pretty one.
Huard wants readers to envision a sisterhood of Wonder Woman-like martial arts masters in the real world; with some “Terminator” and “Hunger Games”-type mentality and setting.

While he said he hopes the world in 1,000 years is a beautiful place, with peace and goodwill, the one in the books is full of war, greed, tyranny, and through the aspect of advanced technology and robotics, humans are messed up and fighting to survive and find a healthy environment to live in.
The country is torn into pieces of its former self. Though, Huard said, that even today mankind is lost in their computers, digital devices constantly in our faces in constantly. These are little robots, and in the series these robots grow bigger.
So how do this sisterhood he writes about play a role in all of it? They are freedom fighters in the modern world. They believe in liberty and justice, patriotism, and truly want the world and in specific, the United States of America to be whole again, Huard said.
Huard said that writing is therapeutic and he really enjoys putting words on paper. His advice to other writers is, “If the words come out easily for you, get them on paper, you can fine tune later.”
Huard is a martial arts instructor, and that knowledge gives the fight scenes a true-to-life feel.
His love of storytelling came from his love of reading, which he said is his great escape. He loves traveling all over the galaxy in books. Stories like “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings,” by JRR Tolkien were a big influence.
“I’ve also been a Dungeons & Dragons game master for over 30 years for a long-time group of fantasy role players; this led my wife to tell me that I should really get my tales on paper,” he said.
Now that the “Master Slayers” trilogy is out, he’s working on a new series, this one Gothic fairy tales.
“It’s going very well,” he said. He’s also working on a retelling of the classic Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” novel. He said, however, it’s different in many ways because the story is about a brother.
He said that books are special — reading is the great adventure. It can take a person all over the world or to new worlds.
