HALLOWELL — Former Maine Municipal Association executive director Christopher Lockwood has released his second book, “Why the Cane?,” the story of his journey to regain a level of activity he thought would not be possible after a devastating injury.
Lockwood launches the book at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Sea Dog Brewing Company in Topsham; and 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at A’Copi Tennis & Sports Center in Augusta.
“Why the Cane?” chronicles Lockwood’s medical journey, the upheaval suffered by his family, and the counsel and support that shifted his focus and provided a framework to make thoughtful decisions for the long term. Former Maine Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. calls the book “a compelling and insightful account of his horrific accident and the inevitable physical and emotional ups and downs of a lengthy recovery. All who are experiencing similar challenges will find hope and perspective in reading ‘Why the Cane?’”
Lockwood was executive director of the Maine Municipal Association from 1979 to 2015. Since retiring, he has pursued his interest in writing following the publication in 2013 of “The Tennis Ball Trees,” a whimsical story of his chocolate Lab’s love of tennis balls. He lives in Hallowell.
