Rumford Elementary students learn about Americans who impact their lives daily

RUMFORD — Students at Rumford Elementary School in February learned about a variety of Black Americans, from Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician featured in the movie “Hidden Figures,” to lesser-known ones like chef George Crum, who invented potato chips.

The program, which comes to Regional School Unit 10 through teacher Adelaide Solomon-Jordan, is in celebration of Black History Month, which is the month of February.
Jordan, who has a masters degree in history, shared her expertise with RES students. Each week, first-graders learn about people how Americans of color have an impact on their daily lives. Picture books from the RES Library are often featured in these lessons.
For Black History Month, Jordan curated an exhibit featuring many Black Americans who have contributed to American history, society and culture. The exhibit is also on display in the Rumford Elementary School lobby for the public to view.
