One of the most current and aptly named threats to data is that of ransomware — the act of encrypting another’s data and then asking for some payment to unlock/return their content. If your content becomes encrypted and you do not have the code used, it is very unlikely you will be able to recover that information.
Therefore, people end up paying these thieves and criminals for the key to unlock what was taken from them. The question then becomes how we can protect ourselves:
The first defense is to have current and verified backups. If your files get encrypted, you can restore from these backups and bypass the threat. Backup verification is very important, you want to know that the backups function before you have to rely on them.
Remember to REST:
* Restrict external access to your network using a firewall.
* Explore protective services that are often bundled with antivirus/antimalware products.
* Stay current on security news using sites like Threatpost.com
* Train yourself/staff to be vigilant and not supply information or click on links that have not been verified.
As we move more into the information age, it becomes more critical that we protect our data. We often use this to remain competitive or to make decisions. If it is not accessible, then we are unable to function at the necessary level. People understand this and try to exploit that relationship. Being aware and taking protections will keep us working and accessing what we need.
