Winners in Topsham VFW post essay contest announced

TOPSHAM — The Rev. Joseph Lamarre Memorial Post 2197 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars recognized local junior high and high school winners in VFW’s national scholastic programs at its December membership meeting.

The topic for high school students in the Voice of Democracy program was “Why my vote matters.” Emily Smith, of Harpswell, won first place honors, and Grace Trebilcock, of Topsham, placed second.
Post 2197 submitted Nick’s and Emily’s entries into District 7 (Mid-Coast area) competition. Emily’s entry was judged to be the best in district.
“We are extremely honored to sponsor her as the district winner in state level competition.” organizers at the post said.
State winners in both the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy programs were announced at an awards banquet in Bangor on Jan. 12.
