BRUNSWICK — Elizabeth D. Leonard will be the guest speaker at the next Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable lecture, on Thursday, Jan. 10.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Morrell Room at the Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St. Leonard will speak on, “Let’s Stop Calling Him Beast: Revisiting the Life of General Benjamin F. Butler,” and discuss how the disparaging characterization of “Beast Butler” has overshadowed the many accomplishments and contributions throughout the general’s long life, including those after his Civil War career.
Leonard is the John J. and Cornelia V. Gibson Professor of History at Colby College, where she has taught since 1992. The lecture is free and open to the public.
