WASHINGTON, D.C. — The VFW’s Voice of Democracy Program, is accepting submissions for its scholarship essay contests for high and middle-school students.
The programs have prizes of up to $30,000 in college scholarships for high school students, and $5,000 for middle-school students.
Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each state wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
The Voice of Democracy audio-essay program allows high-school students to express their opinions and thoughts on the theme “Why My Vote Matters.” The essay should contain originality and be treated to show imagination and human interest. Judging will be based upon originality, content and delivery of essay.
The Patriot’s Pen, for middle-school students, is on “Why I Honor the American Flag.”
The essay will be recorded and submitted to the local VFW post. Area posts include Auburn VFW 1603, Rumford VFW 1641, Jay VFW 3335, Lewiston VFW 9150, South Paris 9787 and Greene VFW 11032.
