NORWAY — Norway Memorial Library, 258 Main St., will implement a fall book discussion series called “Experience a Life through Untold Stories” beginning Thursday, Oct. 25, and continuing Nov 8 and 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The series will consider three novels allowing participants to experience the lives of people they didn’t hear about in history class.
Oct. 25 — “The Aviator’s Wife” by Melanie Benjamin
Anne Morrow, a shy college senior, marries global celebrity Col. Charles Lindbergh. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness.
Nov. 8 — “Fates and Traitors” by Jennifer Chiaverini
This riveting tale follows the notorious John Wilkes Booth and the four women who kept his perilous confidence. Lost to history until now is the story of the four women whom he loved and who loved him in return. “Fates and Traitors” brings to life pivotal actors — some willing, others unwitting –who made an indelible mark on the history of our nation.
Nov. 29 — “The Women in the Castle” by Jessica Shattuck
Set at the end of World War II, in a crumbling Bavarian castle that once played host to all of German high society, a powerful and propulsive story of three widows whose lives and fates become intertwined. Amid the ashes of Nazi Germany’s defeat, this story offers a fresh perspective on one of the most tumultuous periods in history and explores what it means to survive, love, and, ultimately, to forgive in the wake of unimaginable hardship.
